Retiring something is not the same as deleting it.
We map dependencies, preserve what matters, establish rollback where appropriate, execute the retirement and verify the outcome. Deliberate decommission is a project, not a task.
Identify everything that touches the system being retired — integrations, data, processes, people.
Archive data, documentation and access credentials before anything is removed.
Define the path back if something breaks after the change.
Execute the retirement in a controlled, documented sequence.
Confirm the system is gone, nothing broke and the environment is cleaner than before.
Nobody wants to be responsible for turning it off.
It might still be doing something nobody knows about.
The person who built it is gone.
It's cheaper to keep paying for it than to find out what it does.
